Recap: DoraHacks Starship Use Cases Hackathon Round 1

The first round of DoraHacks' Starship Use Cases Hackathon has wrapped up, featuring a variety of submissions, including space hotels, satellite-secured digital identities, orbital labs, fueling stations, Lunar food production, Lunar ISRU, and more. Participants also come from diverse backgrounds, including individual hackers passionate about space architecture, open-source communities like Nexus Aurora, student groups like IITK Rocketry and Space Exploration Team, and space startups from US, Canada and Luxembourg.

We are also grateful to have professionals with extensive industry experience and valuable insights in the space sector join our judging panel, including George Salazar (former NASA Human Computer Interface Lead), Danica Marsden (Principal Quantum Computing Scientist at Bank of Canada), Olayinka Fagbemiro (Chief Scientist Officer at the Nigerian Space Agency), Sean Casey (General Program Manager at UC San Diego and Advisor at Lunar Station Corp), among others. They have provided valuable perspectives for project evaluation and insightful advice for further development of the projects.

The four winning projects in Round 1 are:

  • Helix: A speculative spatial concept for SpaceX's upcoming human-rated Starship, focusing on practicality, efficiency, and experiential quality during long-duration missions.
  • Orbital Can Station: A concept for a highly modular low-cost space station serving as an orbital science park, leveraging the unique capabilities of the Starship launch vehicle to deliver more at lower cost.
  • "Valhalla" Space Hotel: A space hotel design with artificial gravity features, utilizing the capabilities of the SpaceX Starship heavy lift launch system.
  • Novel Satellite Constellation: A solution to revolutionize on-orbit servicing through a novel satellite constellation design, enhancing on-orbit refueling, repairing, and space debris cleanup.
